Jimi needs to be home by 6 o'clock. If he travels at an average rate of 15 mph, he'll arrive one hour early, but if he travels at an average rate of 10 mph, he'll arrive one hour late. How many miles away is his home?

Answer:

The distance would be 60 miles.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let,

d be the distance for him to travel.

t be the time taken if he reaches at exact time.

Therefore,

Case 1:- time = t - 1

speed = 15 mph

Therefore, distance =  15( t - 1)

case2:-

time = t + 1

speed = 10 mph

distance = 10( t +1)

Now, the distance in both cause should be equal

Therefore, 15( t - 1) = 10( t + 1)

                    t = 5 hours.

Now substituing this in either of the equations,

distance = 60 miles.
