Given:

Joe is building a fort for his little brother out of boxes.

To find:

How much space is inside of the fort?

Solution:

To find the volume of the given figure, we need to divide the figure into two boxes: small box and big box.

Small box: Area of small box = height × length × width

A = 10 × 40 × 20

∴ A = 8000 in³

Big Box: Area of big box = height × length × width

A = 20 × 60 × 20

∴ A = 24000 in³

Therefore, the total volume (space inside of the fort) = 24000 + 8000 = 32000 in³
