5. Mangal Pandey was arrested and sentenced to death after he attacked British officers in Barrackpore on March 29, 1857. Anticipating a revolt, British authorities moved up his initial execution date from April 18 to April 8, when he was hanged.
Answer the following questions
1. Foreign trade in India includes all imports and exports to and from India. At the level of Central Government it is administered by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Foreign trade accounted for 48.8% of India's GDP in 2018.
2. Farmers were unhappy because Britishers forced them to grow cash crops . There was nothing for farmers to eat . weavers and treader were in happy because British imposed huge amount of taxes on goods that were made in India where as less tax was impose on thing imported from England.
3. The British produced huge amounts of goods with the help of machines. The cheap machine made textiles from Britain flooded the Indian markets. This led to a loss of demand for the weavers' goods. The railways helped the Company to reach these textiles to the remotest parts of India and get raw materials from there.

5. Immediate Reason of Revolt of 1857. The immediate factor was the introduction of the 'Enfield' rifle. The cartridge had to be bitten off before loading it into the gun. Indian sepoys believed that the cartridge was greased with either pig fat or made from cow fat.

The doctrine of lapse was a policy of annexation initiated by the British East India Company in India in relation to the princely states, and applied until 1859, two years after Company rule was succeeded by the British Raj. Elements of the doctrine of lapse continued to be applied by the post-Independence Indian government to derecognise individual princely families until 1971, when the former ruling families were collectively derecognised.
