John A Pescud was a smart salesman and even sold himself to Jessie's father as her future husband and the father's son in law.
Despite criticizing and ridiculing the bestseller 'The Rose lady and Trevelyan' his life story turns out to be similar.
He claims that most men marry women from their own town, school or singing society and not from far off places like the book's protagonist. Men also marry women from similar social status.
However, John travels from station to station following Jessie. He soon reaches Virginia where she lives and finds out that her father is a lineal descendent of belted earls and that her family is the oldest of the state.
He also says that Trevelyan the protagonist does and says anything and everything for and to his lover. His sickly sweet speech and love driven actions are mocked by John.
The irony can be seen when he talks about his beloved. He says that she made the world better by just residing in it. He even sets out to pick petunias for his wife Jessie from Coketown as they resembled the one she had in the mansion's garden.
This is observed by the narrator who thus gives him the name Travelyan.
