Given :  John and Alex share a farm. John’s share of the farm is 1.5 times that of Alex’s. They each grow wheat and rice on their farms. Of the total area of the farm (adding Alex and John’s share), seven tenths are covered in rice. The ratio of rice to wheat in John’s share is 4:1.

To find : What is the ratio of rice to wheat on Alex’s land

Solution:

Let say  Alex farm   =  4A

then John farm  = 1.5 * 4A   = 6 A

Total  Area of farm = 4A + 6A  = 10  A

Rice = (7/10)10A  = 7A

Wheat = 10A - 7A  = 3A

Ratio of rice to wheat in John’s share is 4:1

=>  Rice  = (4/5) * 6A   =  24/5 A

Wheat  =   6/5 A

Remaining Rice  on Alex land = 7A - 24A/5   =   11A/5

Remaining wheat on Alex land =   3A  -  6A/5   = 4A/5

ratio of rice to wheat on Alex’s land  =11A/5  : 4A/5

= 11 : 4

11: 4 is the ratio of rice to wheat on Alex’s land
