No. of marbles John and Jivanti has = 45
Let no. of marbles John has = x
No. of Jivanti has = (45 - x)

John and Jivanti lost 5 marbles each
Now, no. of marbles John has =  x - 5
No. of marbles Jivanti has = 40 - x
Product of marbles they have now = 128
Therefore
(x - 5) (40 - x) = 128
40x - 200  - x² + 5x =128
45x - 200 - x² = 128
x² - 45x - 328 = 0

This equation satisfies they had to start with.

Hope this helps you.
