Question :-

John bought a shirt on sale for 25% off the original price, which was then further

discounted by 20%. If the final price was $18, what was the price before the first discount?

Solution :-

Here first we find how many % total off to John.

⇒ 25 + 20

⇒ 45%

Now,

If the the total discount is 45% then John get the 55% price from the original price.

Now, we find the original price of shirt.

If 55% price is 18 then,

⇒ 18/55

⇒ 0.32

0.32 is the 1% price of the shirt

⇒ 0.32 × 100

⇒ 32

32 is the original price of the shirt.

We find the price of shirt before discount where discount is 20% the we'll remove 25% from the original price then we will get the price of shirt before discount.

⇒ 25% = 1/4 × 32

⇒ 25% = 8

Now, removing the 25% from original price.

⇒ 32 - 8

⇒ 24

$24 is the price before discount.
