Given :  John jogged from his house to the gym at 6 miles per hour and walked back along the same route at 4 miles per hour.

entire trip took him one hour,

To Find : how many miles his house from the gym

Solution:

Let say Distance between gym & House  =  D  Miles

John jogged from his house to the gym at 6 miles per hour

Hence time taken  = D/6  hr

walked back along the same route at 4 miles per hour.

Hence time taken = D/4  hr

Total Time taken = D/6  + D/4

= (2D + 3D)/12

= 5D/12  hrs

entire trip took him one hour

=> 5D/12 = 1

=> D = 12/5

=> D = 2.4

2.4 Miles is his house from the gym
