The cost price of the article = 400

Given :

John makes a profit of 12% by selling the article for the 448

To find :

The cost price of the article

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Form the equation

Let cost price of the article = 100x

Since John makes a profit of 12% by selling the article

∴ Profit amount

\displaystyle \sf{ = 100x \:  \times  \:  \frac{12}{100}   }

\displaystyle \sf{  = 12x }

∴ Selling price of the article

= 100x + 12x

= 112x

By the given condition

112x = 448

Step 2 of 2 :

Calculate cost price of the article

\displaystyle \sf{ 112x = 448 }

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies x =  \frac{448}{112} }

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies x = 4 }

Hence cost price of the article

= 100x

= 100 × 4

= 400
