Option b)  Both fractions are about 1/2 is a true statement.

Option b) 1m is the best estimate for the combined length of both pieces of string.

Given:

Two pieces of string of length 1/12 m and 4/7 m.

To Find:

The true statement about the lengths of John's string and the combined length of both pieces of string.

Solution:

John's one piece measured 7/12 m = 0.58 m and the other piece measured 4/7=0.57 m

Clearly, 0.58m and 0.57m are less than 1 ,but almost near to the fraction 1/2 = 0.50 m .

∴ Option b)  Both fractions are about 1/2 is true statement.

The combined length of both pieces of string

= 7/12 + 4/7

= (7*7 + 4*12) / (12*7)

= (49 + 48) / 84

= 97/84

= 1.15

≈ 1

∴ Option b) 1m is the best estimate for the combined length of both pieces of string.
