Given :   John stands at the centre of a rectangular field. He first takes 50 steps north, then 25 steps west and finally 50 steps on a bearing of 315°

To find : How far west is John’s final point from the centre

Solution:

                  NORTH

  WEST                  EAST

                 SOUTH

50 Step North

25 Steps  West

Bearing is a direction measured from north and it tracks angle in clockwise direction with north line

a bearing of 315°

Means 315°  from North clockwise

or 45° from North anti clock wise

=> Direction will be North West

50 Steps in direction of North west

North = 50 Sin 45 = 50/√2 =  35.35 Step

West = 35.35 Step

Total North = 50 + 35.35 = 85.35 Steps

Total West = 25 + 35.35  =60.35  Steps

final point from the centre  is  60.35  Steps west
