Concept

Motion and Time

Given

John travelled from his town to city. John went to city by bicycle at the speed of 25 km/h and came back at the speed of 4 km/h. If john took 5 hours and 48 min to complete his journey,

Find:

Distance between the town and city

Solution:

Let the distance between the them be x.

Trip 1

Speed:25kmph

Let time be t_1

speed=\frac{distance}{time} \\t_1=\frac{x}{25kmph}

Trip 2

Speed:25kmph

Let time be t_2

Speed=\frac{distance}{time} \\t_2=\frac{x}{4kmph}

Total trip

t_1+t_2=5hours 48 mins\\t_1+t_2=348 mins\\\frac{x}{25}+\frac{x}{4}=348mins\\ x(\frac{29}{100})=348mins\\\\x=  40km\\

Hence the distance between the towns is 20km since its a round trip
