In India, the old traditional joint family system no longer continues. Most families, particularly in urban areas, have only one or two generation members (i.e., parents and their unmarried children). But, it does not mean that the Indian family is becoming nuclear.

The size of the traditional family has become smaller. Socio- Economic changes have stimulated individualism and brought about changes in the attitude of individuals towards joint family. Urbanisation has emphasised individuality and privacy which gives another incentive for being independent of large family group.
