Given :- The numerator of fraction is 1 less than its denominator. If the numerator is increased by 4 and the denominator is increased by 5, the new fraction becomes equivalent to (4/5) What is the original fraction ?

Answer :-

Let us assume that, the original fraction is x/y .

so,

→ x = y - 1 -------- Eqn.(1)

now,

→ (x + 4)/(y + 5) = 4/5

→ 5(x + 4) = 4(y + 5)

→ 5x + 20 = 4y + 20

→ 5x = 4y

putting value of Eqn.(1) ,

→ 5(y - 1) = 4y

→ 5y - 5 = 4y

→ 5y - 4y = 5

→ y = 5 .

then,

→ x = y - 1 = 5 - 1 = 4 .

therefore, required original fraction will be (x/y) = (4/5) .
