Joys and Sorrows go Hand in Hand in Life

Inayat Khan has beautifully said, ‘Joys and sorrows are the light and shade of life; without life and shade no picture is clear.’ It is the truth of life that joys and sorrows are the two sides of the same coin. Both are integral part of life. They are like the seasons. If joy is the spring, then the other is the winter. There has been no human being on this planet that has not experienced the ecstasies of joy and pangs of sorrow.

All great men have taught mankind to treat joys and sorrows stoically. They have cautioned not to be overjoyed at joys and not to be depressed with the sorrows. Neither joys nor sorrows are permanent. Famous philosopher and writer Kahlil Gibran has written very poetically on joys and sorrows in his book, The Prophet. He writes: ‘Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.’

So, our approach to joys and sorrows should be sagacious. We should neither celebrate our joys nor lament over our sorrows. Both are cyclic in life. as long as there is life, we keep experiencing them one after the other. We should welcome joys when they bring sunshine in our life; we should also welcome sorrows when we feel somber sadness and pain on account of them.
