Abstract
Manipur has a rich history of well organised traditional administrative and judicial system during the period of its independent administration as a kingdom. Though the kings were the head of the state, there were no absolute power to them in the administration as well as judiciary system. There were many administrative positions under the king and many specialized institutes for handling various fields of administration. The women of the state had also taken responsibilities in the administration as well as in establishing a welfare state. Kings of the state had initiated various administrative reforms from time to time. There were efforts to have all round development of the state with proper care taken for economic development by adopting division of works and establishment of new market places; military organisation through the establishment of three wings of soldiers and their constant training and development by means of games and sports, boat races, etc.; Judicial system by establishing Pacha and Cheirap Loishangs; better relationship with neighbouring kingdoms; Pana system (division of administrative units) for better administration; Motivation system through rewards and recognition; etc. The present paper entitled, “Traditional Administrative and Judicial System in Manipur” will be dealt with many aspects of traditional administration and judicial systems of Manipur with soecial focus on role of the kings, ways of giving punishment in the traditional judicial system, role of women in the traditional administration and beauties of traditional Manipuri administration.
