Given : Julio believes that the quotient of 6 ÷ 1 /2 = 3

To find :  Julio’s error

Solution:

Given expression is

6 ÷ 1 /2

Julio’s error is that first

operation is 6  ÷ 1 = 6

and then 6/2  = 3

While to Divide a fraction we must multiply the reciprocal

Hence

6 ÷ 1 /2

= 6 x  2/1

Then first simplify

= 6 x  2

= 12

Hence Quotient is 12  not  3

Why multiply by a reciprocal ( when Dividing by a fraction )

If we are dividing an expression by a fraction, we can rewrite the division as a fraction:

a\div\dfrac{b}{c} =\dfrac{a}{\frac{b}{c} }=\dfrac{ac}{b}
