Metals are solids at room temperature and contains more valence electrons in the outermost orbit and get readily reacted.

Due to this nature they readily gets oxidized when exposed to water in presence of oxygen.

The electrons in the outermost orbit get electronegative charge and forms salts which look like corrosion and protect lower layers of metal to get corroded.
