Justify that the following reactions are
redox reaction; identify the species
oxidized/reduced, which acts as an
oxidant and which act as a reductant.

Answer:

To know the species  which are oxidized/reduced and which acts as an  oxidant and which act as a reductant let's assign oxidation number to each species in reaction.

+1      -2       +1   -2                 0        +4  -2

2Cu₂O(s) + Cu₂S(s) ====> 6Cu(s) + SO₂(g)

In this reaction we can see that,

1. Copper(Cu) gets reduced to zero oxidation state from +1 state.

2. Sulphur gets oxidised to +4 state from -2 state.

And we can also say that this is a redox reaction.

Redox reaction is that reaction in which oxidation numbers changes of atoms.

3. Cu is an oxidant because Cu₂O helps sulphur in Cu₂S to  increase its oxidation number.

4. Copper from both in Cu₂S and Cu₂O  is helped by sulphur to decrease its oxidation number which shows that sulphur of Cu₂S is reductant.

Species to found=>

1. Oxidized => Sulphur(S)

2. Reduced => Copper(Cu)

3. Oxidant => Copper(Cu)

4. Reductant => Sulphur(S)
