Importance of fibre to remove food:

Fibres are one of an important constituent of balanced diet.  Fibres are mainly made of cellulose and large polysaccharides which was not digested by the gastric and intestinal enzymes. So, they add bulk to the main bowel.

This bowel adds friction to inner wall of intestine. This leads to sweeping of the remaining food materials that stick to the intestinal wall. This is why these roughage are also called as intestinal broom. They also irritate the intestinal walls causing increased peristaltic movements.
