In India, the seats for women are reserved upto 33% in all sections, The Lok Sabha, Lower House of the Parliament and the Regional Legislative Council.

It is important to reserve seats for women in the Parliament, in order to;

(i) Allow female representation in the political system where there are very few women. 
(ii) Provide a sense of equality and belonging to women as India is a patriarchal society and women are discriminated against. 
(iii) Empower women and motivates their participation in the political system.
(iv) Allow India to gain a positive standing in the international spectrum.

The need to give reservation to women in the parliament is necessary because:

• The representation is very less which sometimes neglect giving voice to them.

• The political empowerment of women is essential in order to bring them out of social stigmas and patriarchy mindset.

However, one cannot support reservation for women on the following grounds:

• The equal opportunity to study and compete is available to them.
• The reservation to women in Panchayats and Municipalities has not given the same results as expected as their names are used by the male members of their family to carry out politics.
• The alienation of women by granting reservations like SC, ST and OBC would not improve the condition.
