The title is highly suggestive and at once focuses our attention on the main theme i.e experiencing fear of death under water and the efforts of the author to overcome it.
All the details in the essay are based on his personal experience and analysis of fear.
The overpowering force of the waves at the California beach stir aversion for water in Douglas. His mother warns him against swimming in the deep waters of the treacherous Yakima River. The 9 feet deep water of the swimming pool appears more than 90 to Douglas.
However, when he conquers fear he can dive and swim in the deep waters of Lake Wentworth and Warm Lake .
So , the title is appropriate and suggestive.

Deep Water by William Orville Douglas tells us about the writer who overcomes the fear of water through hard work, courage, and willpower. The fear vanishes when one takes the courage to face it. Therefore, by taking courage it shows how our fears are baseless. Dangers are created by fear and therefore the writer at the end justifies the quote, "Where there is a will, there is away."
