Yes, calcium oxide is an ionic compound.

Because,

  • Calcium has an electronic configuration of (2,8,8,2) and oxygen has an electronic configuration of (2,6).
  • Now, to complete the octet of the both calcium and oxygen, the transfer of 2 electrons is necessary.
  • Calcium gives 2 electrons and oxygen takes those 2 electrons. In this way, both fulfils their octet state by forming Ca²+ and O²- ions.
  • Later, the Ca²+ and O²- ions are combined by an ionic bond to form the calcium oxide molecule.
  • That's why, we can say that calcium oxide is an ionic compound.
