Calcium oxide is an ionic compound. Ionic compounds are formed when one element is metal ion/ cation and other element is non metal / anion. In Calcium Oxide(CaO) , Calcium loses two electrons forming a cation (Ca+2)and oxygen has six valence electrons and is looking to gain two electrons to complete the octet and making it an anion (O-2).
