Mitochondria are tiny organelles inside cells that are involved in releasing energy from food. This process is known as cellular respiration. It is for this reason that mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell.

- Mitochondria posses oxysomes on it's inner membrane. These oxysomes takes active part in synthesis of ATP molecules.
- During cellular respiration, ATP molecules are produced and get accumulated in the mitochondria.
- They play an important role in cellular activities.
- Only mitochondria can convert pyruvate into carbon dioxide and water during cell respiration.
- Therefore, mitochondria are called as 'power house of cell'.
