Railway was needed to spread the trade in India.
So, from 1860's the railway network expanded rapidly. In 1946, the length of railway track reached to the 76,500km.So, lay tracks and provide sleepers fro railways more and more trees were cut.In 1850, The Madhya Pradesh alone cut 350,00 tress to provide sleepers. To run locomotives, trees were cut to provide fuel for engines. Railway contractors cut trees indiscrimately .
Thus, forest around the railway track promptly disappeared.
Trees which are grace and beauty of our country wer fast disappearing.
The beauty provided by nature had vanished.
Hence i conclude by saying that railways were a major use of timbers.
