The structure of atlas and axis vertebrae with respect to their position and function is as follows,  

  • The atlas is the first in the vertebral column; it supports the skull from falling ad hence it is named as atlas. In Greek atlas means the God who supports the earth?
  • The axis is the second in the vertebral column; it is named so because it serves as the axis pf rotation when turning the head.
