It is the story of Tricki , an over-pampered and over fed dog . His mistress , Mrs Pumphrey dotes on him and feeds him all the unhealthy delicacies. Due to this, he becomes fat like a bloated sausage and lethargic. She thinks he is listless and seeks help from the veterinary doctor , Dr Herriot .

He knows what is exactly wrong with Tricki and cures him with exercise and a healthy diet. The story focuses on how excess of anything is bad . Here , Pumphrey's pamper resulted to be counterproductive. Though presented in a light and humorous way , the story brings to light how some people , ignorant of th healthy way to groom their pets , spoil their health. So , anything in excess is bad , even love.
