The plot of the story revolves around members of a selfish family who suppose that their father is dead and argue over the division of property. The title of the story is very ironic in the sense that in reality the person who is considered dead turns out to be alive. Since the members of the family are selfish, they are more concerned about the material gains that the death of the individual is likely to facilitate rather than mourning over the dead. The title depicts a very realistic view of the world since the departing of the individual is dear to them for obtaining material gains. Therefore, when they find out that Abel Merry Weather isn't dead, the situation becomes very absurd and turns out to be humorous. Even by the end of the story the characters do not come to realise that the individual is not dead and act greedily to own the property their father possessed. It is more of a pronounced death that the family members and the title hints at. Whereas, within the story the individual whose death is dear to them, is alive. The story ends at the spot where Abel Merry Weather decides to re-marry a woman and pass the entire property to his wife's name. The departure of Abel Merry Weather is superficial in the title. The title presents a false image of the individual who is constantly being discussed within the story by the other characters.
