Explanation:

Kafan is a story written by Munshi Premchand. Kafan in Urdu means shroud. A shroud is a piece of cloth used to cover a body after death.

The story revolves around Budhia who dies. The two men Ghisu and his son Madhav have to beg to buy a shroud for Budhia’s body. But the irony is that as soon as they get the money, they both drink instead of buying the shroud.

Ghisu ponders at the stark reality that the custom is. It is but inhuman that when a living person does not get a rag to cover his body, why should a dead body have a new shroud.

The in-humanness is touched upon here. Shroud or Kafan is an apt title because it brings out the hypocrisy in the system.
