The title highlight the degradation of moral values in the British middle class.The story revolves around the idea of a father's departure from world and the family's reaction to it .A suposed sense of love and affection in the word 'dear'. He is sadly missing in the attitude of his daughters.The unsensitive and hypocrite attitude and pretence of grief and sorrow.There is a twist at the end when the father really departs from the family to a new happier life with mrs. Shorrock.
