In the chapter 'The Dear Departed' Abel Merryweather's two daughters are hypocritical, greedy, selfish and money minded. All they care about is the property of their father. They do not care even a bit for him; this is shown when Mrs.Slater does not even consider calling a doctor to check if her father is really dead or not. The title is ironical as Abel is neither dead nor dear to either of his children. Thus to add a sarcastic and ironical tone to the whole story the title is justified.
