The title of the poem is apt and justified. ‘Rime’ here means the song; ‘ancient’ means old; and ‘mariner’ means the sailor. ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ is the woeful tale of an old sailor’s past spiritual experience which he narrates to the wedding guest in a rhyme.
