There are many substances in nature or that are synthetically produced which are used only for specific purposes. The substances have specific physical and chemical properties that are suitable for using them only in certain areas of work.
There are many simple examples of such particular substances. For example, a soap is a chemical compound ester which comes from an acid. The soap is produced when the esters are hydrolyzed. The soap can be used as body wash, hand washing, for washing of clothes or vessels. But, it cannot be used as a mouthwash or as a toothpaste because toothpaste mainly includes calcium carbonate and sodium fluoride and using other acid-based chemicals like from the soaps can cause abrasions in the mouth and to the gums and teeth.
Similarly, Bakelite is an early plastic which is used in making the handles of pressure cookers. It is lightweight, durable and has electrical non-conductivity and heat-resistant properties, which makes it useful in electrical insulators, radio and telephone casings and other diverse products as kitchenware, jewelry, pipe stems, children's toys, and firearms. Other forms of plastic cannot be used for these purposes.

Well, the simplest answer of this question " to make them suitable for particular use or to give particular characteristics"
The substances are usually made of particular material in order to give them the desired chemical as well as the physical properties and make a suitable substance out of the material suitable for the particular purpose. This also gives the substance the particular characteristics. This is very true in case of synthetic substance.
Most of the thing which we use are made of particular things like a certain wrapper is made of the certain type of polymers which are suitable for making that type of wrapper with desired characteristics in it.You can't use a shopping bag or simple plastic for the wrapping of the biscuits packing at industrial level because because it will not give the desired result .
