Answer:

Mitochondria (sing. Mitochondrion) are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they are responsible for the release of energy from food ,i.e, cellular respiration. This energy is released in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the cell.

Answer:

Mitochondria is called the power house of the cells because it is the only place where ATP is made. After the formation of pyruvate (three carbon molecule) in the cytoplasm, it goes in further breakdown which results in formation of Carbon Dioxide, water and Energy in case of aerobic respiration and lactic acid, water and energy in muscles cells during anaerobic respiration.

So, it may be clear now, why mitochondria is called so. Because, it is the place where ATP is made. And you might be knowing that ATP is the energy currency of cell.

Hope it helps you.
