The Kakori Railway conspiracy was masterminded by Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan.

Both of them belonged to the Hindustan Republican Association. On 9th August, 1925, they plundered a train on one of the Northern Railway lines from Saharanpur to Lucknow to fund their purchase of armoury.

Since a passenger was unintentionally killed, the robbery became a case for murder.
