Introduction

In our daily life ,there are many substances separated from a

mixture of materials. Examples-

1) Tea leaves are separated from liquid with the help of strainer.

2)Grains are separated from stalks.

3) Sand is separated from Salt .

→We need to separate different components of mixture because

these components of mixture are not useful or may be harmful for

us.

Different methods to separate the substances:

Handpicking -The process by which one substance is separated

from another by taking them with the help of hand.

→ It can be used for separating slightly larger sized impurities like

the pieces of dirt stone and husk from wheat, rice or pulses .

Threshing- The process which is used to separate grains from

stalks is called threshing. In this process, the stalks are beaten to

free the grain seeds. It is done with the help of bullock or machines.

Winnowing- The process of separation of heavier or lighter

components of a mixture by wind or blowing air .

→It is used by farmers to separate lighter lighter husk particles from

heavier seeds of grain .

→Husk or dirt particles of pulses are separated by winnowing

because these particles are lighter and carried away by the wind.

Sieving -The process by which fine particles are separated from

bigger particles by using sieve.

→It is used in Flour Mills or at construction sites .

stones are removed from wheat.
