Answer:

Purchasing cost of the item is Rs. 650

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

If SP of an item = Rs. 440

then Loss % = 60% of the profit.

Profit happen if SP = Rs. 1000

To find: Purchase Price , CP

let CP = x

We know that,

Profit % = ( SP - CP )/CP × 100

⇒ Profit % = (1000 - x)/x × 100

According to the Question,

loss % = 60/100 × (1000 - x)/x × 100 = 60(1000 - x)/x = ( 60000 - 60x )/x ......(1)

We also know that,

loss % = (CP -SP)/CP × 100

⇒ loss % = (x - 440)/x × 100 ................(2)

from (1) and (2),

( 60000 - 60x )/x  = 100( x - 440 )/x

60000 - 60x = 100( x - 440 )

60000 - 60x = 100x - 44000

100x + 60x = 60000 + 44000

160x = 104000

x = 650

Therefore, Purchasing cost of the item is Rs. 650
