Given : Kaitlyn bought 2 pieces of gum and 3 candy bars for $3.25.

Jordan bought 4 pieces of gum and 1 candy bar for $2.75 at the same store.

To Find : What is the cost of 1 piece of gum and 1 candy bar?

Solution:

cost of 1 piece of gum   =  G  $

cost of 1 piece of candy bar   =  B  $

Kaitlyn bought 2 pieces of gum and 3 candy bars for $3.25.

=> 2G + 3B  = 3.25    Eq1

Jordan bought 4 pieces of gum and 1 candy bar for $2.75

=> 4G  + B  = 2.75    Eq2

2 * Eq1  - Eq2

=> 6B  - B  =   6.5 - 2.75

=> 5B =  3,75

=> B = 0.75

4G  + B  = 2.75

=> 4G + 0.75 = 2.75

=> 4G = 2

=> G = 0.5

cost of 1 piece of gum   =  0.5  $

cost of 1 piece of candy bar   = 0.75  $
