                       KALPANA CHAWLA – MY INSPIRATION

Choosing my hero took a while for me. I couldn’t just choose anyone. It took a lot of time for me. I wanted to pick someone who has really done something to be proud of and that people will remember them by. After careful thought and consideration I chose Kalpana Chawla.

Many of you might know who she is already, but for those of you who don’t know who she is, she is one of the seven astronauts killed in the tragic wreck of Columbia, the spaceship that crashed a few years back. The crash was a tragedy that shocked us all.

Kalpana Chawla (March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003) was an American astronaut of Indian origin. She was the first Indian-American astronaut and the first Indian woman to go into space. She was born in Karnal, Haryana. She got a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering elementary school. She moved to America and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in the 1990s. She earned a master's degree in aeronautical. She got her doctorate from the University of Colorado in 1993. She began flying with people for NASA at the Ames Research the same year.

Kalpana was first selected by NASA in December 1994. At that time she was told she was going to be the crew representative to work technical issues for the Astronaut Office EVA/Robotics and Computer Branches. Kalpana worked as hard as she could and gave 110% all the time. On the STS-87 her position was mission specialist and prime robotic arm operator. She completed 6.5 million miles in 252 orbits of the Earth and 376 hours and 34 minutes in space on her very first mission.

Kalpana immigrated to America from India in the 1980’s. When she got to America she attended the University of Texas and University of Colorado where she got both her undergraduate and advanced degrees in aerospace engineering. By that time she had been selected by NASA to be an astronaut trainee. She went on her first trip into space in 1997 and chalked up 6.5 million miles! She first flew in 1997 on the Space Shuttle Columbia. She served on the shuttle as of mission specialist and the main person sleeping the shuttle's robotic arms.

In 2000, Chawla was selected for her second voyage into space, serving again as a mission specialist on STS-107. The mission was delayed several times, and finally launched in 2003 with her other six crew members but unfortunately she got killed in Space Shuttle Columbia disaster with the other six members.  Over the course of the 16-day flight, the crew completed more than 80 experiments.

We lost a great woman who was full of spirit. She died like a hero, who is still alive in all of our hearts. She is a role model for many young women in India & around the world. She belonged to a small town, a bag full of big dreams within it. She took step and fought hard against various rules set by society to change her dreams into reality.

She is the best example for all those young women who want to pursue their dreams but due to some circumstances either it can be, society, parents, lack of confidence, a fear to be unsuccessful etc, stops to follow your dreams. But in my opinion we should never hesitate to speak all about instead of keeping the things in ourselves.

Why did I choose Kalpana Chawla? She is a hero in my eyes and many others as well. She was caring, thoughtful, brave, and very adventurous. This woman tried her hardest at everything and deserves to be recognized as a hero.
