According to question:

★He sold 40 % more than he ate

= ( x+40x/100 )

=100+40x / 100

= 140x / 100

= 7x/5 apples

Apples Sold = 70 [Given]

⇒ 7x/5 = 70

⇒ 7x = 70 × 5

⇒ 7x = 350

⇒ x = 50

∴ He ate 50 apples.
