Kamaraj served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for 10 long years.
He was born on 15 July 1903 in Virudupatti in southern Tamil Nadu. He was one the leader of the Indian National Congress(INC) often referred as the Kingmaker in the Indian politics during 1960.
He held on to the post of President of INC for two terms that is four years between 1964–1967. He was the main force behind the elevation of Lal Bahadur Shastri as the Prime Minister of India soon after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru's death and also played a vital role in the elevation of Indira Gandhi after Bahadur Shastri's demise.
He became the third Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu between 1954–1963 and was also a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from 1952 to 1954 and from 1969 to 1975. He took important steps in improving the life of the underprivileged and developing the infrastructure of the state.
He died on 2nd October 1975. He was honored with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour in 1976.
