⚜We all know that Lord Shiva had married to Goddess Parvati, who was the daughter of Daksha. Daksha was a very powerful king of that time.

⚜Daksha, didn't like his Son in law, so he didn't invited them to a Jagna, A ritual function. But, Parvati couldn't resist, and went to the function. Daksha was angry and insulted Shiva in front of her.

⚜Parvati couldn't resist it and killed her at the spot. Shiva was deeply saddened by her death and carried her body on his head all over the Universe. He grew very angry and performed his penance.

⚜ By seeing this, Vishnu cut down the body of Goddess into 51 pieces which fell on earth at different places. These places are said to be sacred and one of the places was near a hill in Guwahati, where the famous Kamikhya temple is said to be originated.

⚜ But, Shiva was not yet convinced, and he continued his penance. All other lords, were afraid that he might gain universal power. So, Kamadeva, "The God of love"was sent to help him regain his love again. But, Shiva burnt him into ashes. He originated again in rupa in the same place, Hence the name is Kamarupa.
