कांच को बनाने के लिए कई पदार्थों को ऊँचे तापमान पर गलाते हैं। सिलिका इसका मुख्य पदार्थ होता है। इसे सोडा ऐश और लाइमस्टोन के साथ मिलाकर 1700० C के तापमान पर गलाते हैं। उसे भिन्न रंगों का बनाने के लिए अन्य पदार्थ मिलाये जा सकते हैं।
