Emperor Kanishka was a very notable ruler of ancient India and he was known to be a very strong patron of Buddhism.

  • He was considered to be a follower of Buddhism as he was responsible for calling the Buddhist council in Kashmir as early as 78 AD.
  • The location was at Kundalvana and it was the fourth council. The scholars who were present in his court were Asvaghosa, Vasumitra, Charaka, Nagarjun and Parsva.
