Given :

The price of each pound of peaches = $4.00

The price of each pound of apples = $2.00

Karin bought 25 lb of peaches and 15 lb of apples.

To Find :

what price should she pay for 10 lb to make average price $3.50/lb.

Solution :

Price of purchased 25 lb of peaches = 25 × 4

                                                             = $100

Price of purchased 15 lb of apples = 15 × 2

                                                        = $30.00

She purchased the total amount of fruits = 25 lb + 15 lb

                                                                  = 40 lb

and the price for 40 lb fruits  = 100 + 30

                                               = $130

The average price per pound = \frac{130}{40}  = $3.25/lb

She wants to purchase 10 lb another kind of fruit to make the average price per pound equal to $3.50.

Karin wants the total amount of fruits = 50 pounds

Let the price of 10 lb another fruit = x

Therefore the equation will be

\frac{(x+130)}{50}=3.50

x + 130 = 175

x = 175 - 130

x = 45

Price of 1 lb another kind of fruit = \frac{45}{10}  = $4.5/lb

Karin should pay $45 for 10 lb additional fruits to make the average price per pound equal to $3.50.
