Karl takes a ride in a taxi and is charged $2.75 for the first 3/4 of a mile. He is charged $0.25 for each additional 1/10 of a mile traveled and gives the driver a $3.50 tip. Explain how to determine the number of miles that Karl can ride in the taxicab for a total of $28.50 including the tip. Show your work.

Step-by-step explanation:

first take out $3.5 from $28.5

now you are left with 25 dollar

for the first 0.75 mile you are charged $2.75

now you have $22.5 and you have travelled 0.75 miles

with the left money i.e. $22.75 you can travel 8.9 miles with the rate of $0.25 per 1/10 mile

so overall you can travel 8.9+0.75 miles

i.e. 9.65 miles in total with $28.5
