- In Direct speech, we repeat the exact words by the speaker. Reporting speech is placed between inverted commas. For example, He said, " I have lost my pen".
2. Indirect Speech:
- In Indirect Speech, we repeat in our own words what is said by the speaker. generally, we use "said that" in this speech. For example, He said that he had lost his pen.
When we change direct speech to indirect speech:

Answer:
( Karthik said to me , " I played chess yesterday ." ) answer
- The direct speech is said to turn into indirect speech and it is : Karthik told me that He had played chess the previous day.
- Reporting verb and reported speech have been written in Simple Past Tense, that's why when it will turn into indirect speech then the reported speech will also be written in Past Perfect Tense and it is mentioned in indirect speech : had played chess the previous day.
- Here 'he' has been used to indicate Karthik because he played chess yesterday. 'The previous day' has been used to replace 'yesterday'.
- Therefore the right answer is : He had played chess the previous day.
