Karuna rasa is a sadness rasa that takes various forms. This is because the word Karuna in Sanskrit originally means sadness. However, today of the various forms that it takes, the highest form is compassion. Pity and sympathy are two other forms. In India, this rasa is primarily illustrated in various types of theater, literature, and art forms.

Examples of these include a mother’s sympathy for her baby when it starts crying and a person’s pity for a beggar seeking alms on the street.
