Kasim was a labourer selling old rags to earn his living. He had his family living in the village. He used to sleep wherever he could find a place. Sometimes he slept in front of some shops, sometimes under the bridge,. At times, he went hungry to bed. His income was rupees five hundred a month.
Similarly, Rizwan used to sell cold drinks. He had applied for a job in a well known newspaper agency Kihaan. For this, he was asked to submit five interviews with five people along with their names and addresses. On interviewing Kasim, it dawned on him how closely related their lifestyles were. As Kasim had not given him the proper address, Rizwan was compelled to write his own name and address on the interview.
Rizwan then left for his home, with hunger pangs in his stomach. He had the satisfaction that the next day again he would come to work, but he was also worried as he had to find another person for interviewing.
The author shows how the uneducated, poor as well as the educated unemployed get the pangs of hunger. It is a universal problem. Many are victims of starvation.
